The action research will be addressed by a main inquiry and
smaller, more specific sub-inquiries.
The primary wondering is: What is the effectiveness of brain-compatible
strategies to learning? The sub-topics
are more in depth. They are as follows: How are the brain-compatible strategies
effective in increasing student engagement in the learning environment? How are the brain-compatible strategies
effective in increasing instructional time in the classroom? How are the brain-compatible strategies
effective in reducing off-task behavior?
I like how specific your plan is. You commented that you felt it might be repetitive, but I find that it might be helpful to have it broken down in that manner as way to remind yourself of the path to follow.
ReplyDeleteQuestions that come to mind (and maybe you have this in your blog somewhere and I just missed it) are how large or small of a sampling are you going to use? How many teachers are involved in your project, or will it be campus-wide? What, specifically, are you using to measure if change has occured? Just some questions that I asked myself as I was looking through your blog :)
The action research project will be conducted by five 7th grade teachers, a math, science, social studies, math, and reading teacher, each implementing and documenting on two classes each. I decided to choose 7th grade because it is a challenging group of kids. We were warned since last year when they were 6th graders, that we were going to have our hands full, both academically and behavior wise. I decided to choose a teacher from each content to verify that the strategies worked regardless of content area. Change will be measured by student averages and assessment scores and reduction in behavior problems through teacher observation, referrals and ISS. My site supervisor wants a clear and specific baseline on my evaluation process so I will be working on that during my literature review. Thanks for the great observations.
DeleteI looked up the Brain Capatable Strategies that you are using and they are much like the ICLE teacher strategies that that organization uses. I did a professional deveopment for our staff of 80 at the beginning of the year. I popcorned out about 18 strategies and the groups created anchor charts for their assigned strategy and each group presented them to the staff. The anchor charts are hanging in the teacher planning room for reminders while they are planning. I am not sure if you have seen this but I found this site while I was looking at Branin Capatable Strategies: http://www.thearcoftexas.org/site/DocServer/Kirby_Thursday_DI_and_Brain_Based_Learning.pdf?docID=335
ReplyDeleteOne suggestion is to get a day of subs for the partisipating teachers so that they can plan the implementation of the strategies.
Good suggestion. Our district is always struggling for subs but I will bring it up to admin. That would show the participating teachers that adminstration is supporting and appreciating their volunteer participation. Thanks for the suggestion.
